How the Age Calculation Works
Age calculation measures the time difference between two dates. Calendar months vary in length (28 to 31 days) and leap years add an extra day to February. To calculate age precisely:
- Determine the difference in years first. If the target month/day occurs before the birth month/day, subtract one year from the simple calendar year difference.
- Compute the remaining months. If the target day of the month is less than the birthday, subtract one month and calculate the remaining days based on the number of days in the previous month.
- Total days lived is calculated by finding the absolute difference in milliseconds between the two dates and dividing it by 86,400,000.
Worked Example
Suppose a person was born on 15 October 1995, and we calculate their age on 9 July 2026:
- Years difference: 2026 - 1995 = 31. Since July is before October, they haven't reached their birthday this year. Thus, they are 30 years old.
- Months difference: From 15 October 2025 to 15 June 2026 is 8 months.
- Days difference: From 15 June 2026 to 9 July 2026 is 24 days.
- Exact Age: 30 years, 8 months, and 24 days.
